As those that have been following my blog know, I have not had the best luck with travel - all those busses, ferries, planes, trains, etc. That said, Haley and I had an interesting experience getting to Split from Zurich to catch our Yacht for Yacht Week.
Time:
5:30AM: Wake up in Zurich and head to airport
8:00AM: Delayed
8:10AM: Time to board
9:45AM: Still sitting on the runway with updates in German apparently saying that they don't know if we are able to take off due to a plane part missing
10:30AM: If all had gone well, we would have been landing in Colonge, Germany to transfer flights. But, still on the runway in Zurich
11:00AM: FINALLY take off from Zurich
12:00PM: Flight to Split missed as still in the air from Zurich
12:30PM: Land in Cologne, get lost trying to find the Germanwings help desk, and then someone who understands we need to find a way to Split that day so we don't miss Yacht Week
1:30PM: Told that we can take a flight from Dortmund (like an hour away), get 10 Euro voucher for food (this goes to a round of drinks, obviously) - steal two large handfuls of mints from the Germanwings help counter
2:00PM: Taxi arrives to take us to Dortmund...doesn't speak English. Have to use my iPhone translator to ask him to turn on the radio...Haley and I now believe we can speak German
2:05PM: Decide this trip needs roadies, do charades with the driver to get him to stop
2:15PM: Success with the beer:
4:30PM: Catch the flight to Split!
5:45PM: Land in Split, try to find a taxi that speaks English to take us to the second marina of Yacht Week so we can find our boat.
6:45PM: Get to the resort, end up on the opposite side, as you would assume the Yachts would be parked at the Yacht Marina...false
7:15PM: Get a hold of crew member and learn we are on the opposite side
7:45PM: Convince hotel to arrange a car to take us there (it was close to a mile away)...driver is the security guard, he is awed that we are from New York (we leave good impression)
8:00PM: Finally make it to our boat and make the boys carry our bags
8:15PM: Necessary cocktail to start off Yacht Week
